Under the earth
The earth cellars in Knöringen are unique in the entire Palatinate!
These are clay cellars which, according to experts, are 300 to 350 years old. These cave passages were used by farmers to store potatoes and vegetables due to the constant temperatures of between six and seven degrees. A total of 13 historic earth cellars can be found in Knöringen in an embankment on the way to the cemetery.
The main corridors reach about ten metres into the ground. Side corridors up to four metres long lead off to the sides. As there are orchards above the earth cellars and no heavy agricultural machinery is allowed on this area, the earth cellars are safe and not in danger of collapsing.
In 2016, the local community of Knöringen, together with a cave research group from Karlsruhe, began to uncover the overgrown cave passages, make sketches and documentation and study the wildlife. The aim of uncovering the caves is to preserve part of the local history and contribute to environmental and nature conservation.
The excavated earth cellars are used in different ways. A nativity scene is set up in one of the cellars during Advent. Some of the cellars are equipped with bat boxes and special doors, providing shelter for this endangered species.
Those interested can visit the cellars. As the entrances are closed for security reasons, an appointment must be made in advance with Dieter Dietsch on 06341-62521.
