Seit 1961 in städtischer Trägerschaft, erhielt die Sternwarte 1966 den Namen des Naturwissenschaftlers und Astronomen Friedrich Adolph Wilhelm Diesterweg (1790 - 1866). Getragen von einer imposanten Volksinitiative, konnten die Provisorien 1968/69 durch einen Neubau mit Planetarium und einer 3-Meter-Beobachtungskuppel ersetzt werden.
Zur Technischen Ausstattung gehört seit 1969 als größtes Teleskop ein Zeiss-Condé-Refraktor mit einer Brennweite von 2250mm. 1984 erhielt die Sternwarte ein neues Zeiss-Kleinplanetarium ZKP 2; als erste sächsische Sternwarte verfügt sie über ein Spektrohelioskop und seit 2003 auch über ein Radioteleskop.
