Výskyt travertínov je vo vulkanickom pohorí, akým sú Štiavnické vrchy, pomerne výnimočný. “Mamut” je travertínový výtvor prírody, ktorý vznikol vyzrážaním vápenitej zložky z termálnej vody po ochladení. Vápnik prerástol zvyškami listov a machom a vytvoril objekt tvarom pripomínajúci hlavu a chobot mamuta.

Vyhniansky travertín nieje len dielom prírody, ale aj ľudského dôvtipu. Podľa tvaru ho „Mamutom“ začali nazývať turisti, neskôr sa však tento názov ujal aj u domácich. Za CHPV bol vyhlásený v roku 1986. Tým, že je naň privádzaná termálna voda, je stále „živým organizmom“ a neustále dorastá.

CHPV Vyhniansky travertín je jedinou zachovanou živou travertínovou kopou z pôvodných dvoch vo Vyhnianskej doline. Staršia Kaskáda pod kúpeľom Bankáreň bola zahrnutá hlinou pri stavbe vonkajšieho bazéna v 60. rokoch 20. storočia po zničení pôvodných kúpeľov po 2. svetovej vojne.

Na antukových ihriskách pri Mamutovi sa v minulosti uskutočňovala významná športová akcia-Medzinárodný volejbalový turnaj juniorov a junioriek na antuke - Memoriál Júliusa Moru.
