The idyllic black ponds are six interconnected ponds. In the shore area there are reed beds, dwarf rush and water plant communities.
The ponds are a breeding, resting and feeding area for birds as well as a habitat for dragonflies and amphibians.
The ponds are also fishing ponds. For more information (including guest fishing permits), contact ASV Enkenbach-Alsenborn http://www.asv-enkenbach.de/ or the fishing lodge.

Today the ponds are classified as natural monuments, but in reality they are also industrial monuments.
They were created in 1809 by the industrialist Baron von Gienanth. At that time, the water power of the Alsenz River still played a very important role. The Gienanths operated an iron hammer mill about 12 km downstream in Schweisweiler. The building still exists today and now serves as a town house. The Schwarzweiher, along with other ponds in the upper reaches, were buffer reservoirs from which water was fed into the Alsenz during drought to power the iron hammers.
