The large weathered sandstone block, also known as Bärenstein or Druidenstein, is a natural monument. Whether it was particularly revered in earlier times is unknown to us; it is unlikely that it served as an altar at any time.
The so-called Victim Altar, also known as Druid Stone, Pagan Stone, or Bear Stone, is a large sandstone block of unusual shape that resembles a mushroom. It is located in the area of the Lower Castle, on the mountain plateau above Weilerbach Castle. The gigantic stone displays the typical weathering forms of Luxembourg sandstone and lies on a base of smaller rock blocks.
There is no evidence that the stone was shaped by human hands or actually served as a victim altar. Its size alone makes usage as an altar unlikely; moreover, no offerings have been found in its vicinity. Perhaps in earlier times, the striking stone was attributed a special power - no one can prove that.
The concrete support between the base and the stone is a testament to the eventful history: After World War II, the "Victim Altar" was torn from its base and later lifted back into place.
The "Victim Altar" is located along the Nature Park Hiking Trail No. 57 and can also be reached via the zigzag footpath from the Diana Monument near Weilerbach.
