Als einziger, heimischer Nadelbaum trägt der mindestens 150 Jahre alte Baum keine Zapfen, sondern Samen. Diese sind zur Reifezeit mit einem auffallend, rot gefärbten Mantel umgeben. Deshalb der Zusatz im Namen „baccata“ d.h. beerentragend. Dieser Mantel ist auch das Einzige was nicht giftig ist an diesem sonst sehr giftigen Baum. Von Rehen und Wildschweinen gern gefressen, reicht dagegen schon ein Pfund Eigennadeln um ein Pferd zu vergiften. Übrigens waren die Giftpfeile der Kelten mit einem Eibenblättersud getränkt. Und auch die dazugehörigen Bögen waren aus dem besonders elastischen Eibenholz gefertigt. Als Symbol für den Tod und die Auferstehung wächst sie auf manchem Friedhof. Diese Symbolik beruht auch auf keltischen Einflüssen, denen die Eibe heilig war. Als immergrünes Gehölz versinnbildlicht die Eibe die Ewigkeit und wurde deshalb später auch auf christlichen Grabstätten angepflanzt.
