In the 19th century, Victor Guerber, parish priest of Saint-Georges, created a legend around Saint Arbogast and the Gros Chêne in the Haguenau forest. A monument was erected in 1862 to celebrate Arbogast, attracting pilgrims. Although the historical accuracy is disputed, the tradition persists, and an annual mass has been celebrated in July since 1955, near the remains of the Gros Chêne.
Near the Gros Chêne site, you'll find a picnic area, a playground and an inn. The site is also the starting point for a number of signposted footpaths, cycle and mountain bike trails, fitness trails and a path accessible to people with reduced mobility and baby carriages.
