The Dengelstein in the Kempten forest is over eight metres high, has a volume of about 500 cubic metres and a weight of 1250 tonnes. This makes it the largest preserved boulder of the Iller Glacier, which probably transported it from Rottachberg to this place. It is assumed that in Celtic times horses were sacrificed in the fire at this place. Their figure and altar-like appearance helped some of the boulders to be used as sacrificial and cult sites. Some were later decorated with Christian crosses. Around the Dengelstein even the hint of a rampart can be seen.
According to legend, a wild wife had been transformed into a dragon and forged into chains on the dendal stone; to get away from the rock again, the dragon had to deny a giant scythe until it was finished. But every good stroke the dragon made, he spoiled with the next, so that his work never ended.
When people heard the uncanny sound of dengling from the forest, they believed that their region was on the brink of disaster, like hunger or plague.
