Das Museum zeichnet die Geschichte der Walfahrt. Beginnend mit der Schenkungsurkunde des Kreuzpartikels über den Wandel zur Marienwallfahrt.

Das Museum wurde im Jahre 1840 zum 250jährigen Jubiläum der Wahlfahrt nach Maria Steinbach gegründet. Es zeichnet die Entwichlung und den Wandel der Marienwahlfahrt nach. Es beeindruckt mit der Schenkungsurkunde des Kreuzpartikels, Mirakel- und Gebetsbüchern, den Bruderschaftsinsignien mit Prozessionsstagen und Dokumenten zum Prozessionverlauf. Die Menge der erhaltenen Vtivtafeln ist besonders imposant. Thematisch geordnet nach Votationsanlässen und sozialer Herkuft der Votanten sind sie ein beredter Nachweis für die Intensität der Volksfrömmigkeit über die Jahrhunderte hinweg. An exemplarisch vorgeführten Stücken werden die Erkenntnisse der aktuellen Votivbildforschung verdeutlicht.
