Es wurde am 6. Oktober 1899 von Pfarrer Conrad Dillner nach einer Altertumsausstellung im Frühjahr im Rathaussaal, anfangs in der Bürgerschule, später im Hafermagazin der Karabiniers, in der Superintendentur und letztlich im Rathaus untergebracht. Auf halber Höhe zur Aussichtsplattform des Rathausturmes gelangt der Besucher über die 300 Jahre alte Wendeltreppe durch eine knarrende Eisentür ins Museum. In der unteren Etage befindet sich die Ausstellung „Aus dem Leben der alten Pegauer“. Darin finden sich von der Kindheit, Schule, Beruf, Verein, Gaststätte, Hobby Zeugnisse unseren Altvorderen.
