The Regional Ethnographic Museum in Plovdiv is one of Bulgaria’s most important ethnographic museums and is housed in the magnificent Kuyumdzhioglu House, a masterpiece of Bulgarian National Revival architecture. The museum preserves and presents the traditional culture, crafts, customs, and daily life of the Plovdiv region and southern Bulgaria. Its collections and historic setting make it one of the highlights of Plovdiv’s Old Town.
The museum occupies the Kuyumdzhioglu House, an exceptional merchant residence built in 1847 for the wealthy trader Argir Kuyumdzhioglu. Designed by the renowned builder Hadzhi Georgi from Kosovo, the building is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Bulgarian National Revival architecture. Its elegant symmetry, richly decorated façades, spacious reception halls, painted interiors, and beautifully landscaped courtyard reflect the prosperity and cosmopolitan character of Plovdiv during the nineteenth century.

The Regional Ethnographic Museum was established in 1917 and today houses one of the largest ethnographic collections in Bulgaria. Its exhibitions explore traditional crafts, agriculture, trade, textiles, jewellery, folk costumes, religious customs, music, and domestic life from the Rhodope Mountains, Thrace, and other regions of southern Bulgaria. Through thousands of artefacts, photographs, and reconstructed interiors, the museum illustrates the cultural diversity and artistic traditions that shaped the region. The combination of the museum's extensive collections and its remarkable historic building offers visitors a comprehensive introduction to Bulgarian folk culture and heritage.

Public transport

Plovdiv is easily reached by frequent train and bus services from Sofia, Burgas, Varna, Stara Zagora, and other major Bulgarian cities. The museum is located in the Old Town and can be reached by local buses serving central Plovdiv. From the central railway and bus stations, visitors can take public transport or a taxi to the historic centre.

The museum is situated on ul. "Doctor Stoyan Chomakov" in the heart of Plovdiv's Old Town. From the main pedestrian area and the Roman Stadium, it can be reached on foot in approximately 10–15 minutes via the cobbled streets leading uphill into the historic quarter. The building's distinctive façade and prominent location make it easy to identify.
