The Pine Tar Museum is a small open-air ethnographic site located along the Devil’s Path Eco Trail near the village of Borino in the Rhodope Mountains. It preserves the memory of traditional pine tar production, an important rural craft that once provided materials for construction, transport, and everyday life in the region. The museum offers visitors an insight into the historical relationship between local communities and the surrounding forests.
Situated near the entrance area of the Devil’s Path Eco Trail, the Pine Tar Museum presents one of the traditional industries that historically supported mountain communities in the Rhodope region. Pine tar was produced through the slow burning and distillation of resin-rich pine wood in specially constructed earth-covered kilns. The resulting tar was widely used for waterproofing wooden structures, preserving tools, protecting carts and agricultural equipment, and treating various wooden surfaces.

The museum forms part of a broader effort to preserve the cultural heritage of Borino and the surrounding mountains. Through reconstructed production facilities and interpretive displays, visitors can learn about the techniques, tools, and labour involved in tar production, a process that required considerable knowledge of local forests and natural resources. Its location beside the eco trail connects the cultural history of the region with the dramatic natural landscape of gorges, forests, waterfalls, and rock formations that characterise the Devil’s Path area.

Public transport

Borino can be reached by regional bus services from larger towns in the Rhodope Mountains, including Smolyan and Devin. Public transport connections are limited and may require transfers depending on the point of departure. From Borino, visitors generally need to use a taxi or private vehicle to reach the main entrance area of the Devil’s Path Eco Trail, where the museum is located.

Directions

The museum is located near the northern entrance of the Devil’s Path Eco Trail, east of Borino. From the village centre, follow the road towards the Chala area and continue to the marked entrance of the eco trail. The museum can be found close to the main gateway and visitor area before the trail enters the gorge section. It is easily accessible on foot from the nearby trailhead and serves as one of the introductory attractions for visitors beginning the route.

Parking

Parking is available near the northern entrance of the Devil’s Path Eco Trail, where a designated visitor car park has been established. Additional roadside parking may be available depending on visitor numbers, although spaces can become limited during busy periods. Parking at the trail entrance is generally free of charge.
