During the Ottoman siege of Belgrade the tower played a key defensive role. Cannons positioned in the tower repeatedly repelled Ottoman assaults between July and August 1521. Contemporary chronicles describe how the defenders used artillery from the tower to inflict heavy losses on the attacking army. Eventually the Ottomans succeeded in setting the structure on fire, which allowed them to breach the defence and capture the city. The victorious Suleiman the Magnificent later ordered the tower to be rebuilt.
After Belgrade returned to Ottoman control following the Treaty of Belgrade, the tower lost its strategic military function. The surrounding gate was sealed, and Nebojša Tower was converted into a prison. Conditions inside were notoriously brutal. Prisoners were reportedly executed by strangulation and their bodies thrown through the tower’s openings into the Danube below, giving the structure a grim reputation in Belgrade’s history.
Today the tower forms part of the extensive Belgrade Fortress complex. Restored and opened to visitors, it serves as a cultural and historical monument reflecting the turbulent military history of Belgrade at the meeting point of empires.
