Not far from the site where the world-famous skeleton of the Neanderthal man was found over 160 years ago stands one of the most modern museums in Europe. The Neanderthal Museum in Mettmann is located in the centre of the Neandertal valley of the same name, the oldest nature reserve in Germany. The museum is one of six highlights of the Neandertal Adventure World.
In a multimedia permanent exhibition, visitors from all over the world are told the prehistory and early history of mankind from the beginnings in the African savannahs more than many million years ago to the present day. This journey through time is illustrated with life-size and faithfully reconstructed Neanderthal figures and a baby mammoth.

Regularly changing special exhibitions on a wide variety of human history topics round off the programme. Whether young or old, numerous hands-on stations, exciting workshops and guided tours ensure an unforgettable experience in the fascinating world of the Stone Age.

The Stone Age workshop invites young explorers in particular to actively explore the world of early man in a playful way. Under expert guidance, the curious can try out Stone Age craft techniques and create their own cave-painted works of art - also as a Stone Age birthday party. Directly opposite the museum is a unique and adventurous adventure world including a water feature: children can let off steam on the Stone Age playground and make connections with prehistoric times and the Neanderthals at the same time.

A visit to the foundation site with the new "Höhlenblick" adventure tower completes the museum tour. The approx. 22 metre high tower with a domed roof in the shape of a Neanderthal skull offers a view back into Stone Age history through virtual telescopes on a viewing platform.

The charming Museum Café is the perfect place to round off an exciting visit to the Neanderthal Museum.

The establishment has been awarded the TYPICAL neanderland seal of quality.
