The Museum am Markt provides an overview of the history of the town of Schiltach, using exemplary examples to illustrate formative influences. A certain chronology is maintained in the tour through the three-storey typical Schiltach farmhouse.
The history of Schiltach's rule, which began in the 13th century, is illustrated by the decline of Schiltach Castle and the excavation of Willenburg Castle.
From the pre-Reformation 16th century, one of the numerous town fires, to which the condemnation of a woman as a witch was linked, is taken up and presented in pictures and words - as a radio play. Another room introduces the reformation of this region, which also remains the basis for the presentation of the traditional costumes and rare customs of our region.
The guild organisation of the trades, demonstrated by the example of a collective guild in which leather-working and processing craftsmen were united, sheds light on the working world of the 19th century. The documentation of flax and hemp processing provides an introduction to the women's field of work, and their obligatory skills in handling textiles are also demonstrated.
The history of industrialisation in Schiltach also takes place in the textile area: cloth production from the early 19th century to the 1960s.
The former granary floor houses the area for changing special exhibitions on a range of topics relating to the town and the region.
