The Historical Museum in Svilengrad is the main cultural institution preserving the heritage of the town and its surrounding region in south-eastern Bulgaria. Housed in an early 20th-century building in the city centre, it presents archaeological, historical, and ethnographic collections. The museum offers a detailed overview of life along the Maritsa River and the nearby Eastern Rhodopes and Sakar Mountains.
The museum is located in a well-preserved early 20th-century house with an adjoining garden, reflecting the architectural style of the period. It is organised into three main exhibition sections: history, archaeology, and ethnography. Together, these collections illustrate the development of Svilengrad and its region from antiquity through the Ottoman period to modern times.

The exhibits include archaeological artefacts, historical documents, photographs, manuscripts, weapons, tools, and objects related to everyday urban and rural life. Particular emphasis is placed on traditional crafts and industries such as silk, cotton, and wool production, which played an important role in the local economy. The museum also houses personal belongings, medals, and memorabilia connected to individuals of local and national significance. In the garden area, there is an additional exhibition space for temporary displays and a commemorative alley dedicated to notable figures from Svilengrad and the surrounding region.

Public transport

Svilengrad is accessible by intercity bus services from Sofia, Plovdiv, and Haskovo, as well as by rail connections along the Plovdiv–Kapitan Andreevo line. The town is close to the borders with Greece and Turkey, making it a regional transport hub. From the main bus or train stations, the museum can be reached on foot within a short walk through the city centre.

Directions

From Svilengrad town centre, head towards bul. “Balgariya”, one of the main central boulevards. The museum is located at number 150 in a central urban area, easily accessible from the main pedestrian and commercial streets. Its position within a landscaped property makes it straightforward to identify.

Parking

Parking is available along bul. “Balgariya” and in nearby public parking areas within the town centre. As this is a central location, availability may vary during peak hours, but street parking is generally accessible within a short walking distance of the museum. Visitors are advised to use designated municipal parking zones where available.
