South-east of Vienna, in the Lower Austrian municipality of Rohrau, lies the birthplace of two of the most significant composers in music history: Joseph and Michael Haydn.
In the thatched-roof farmhouse built by master carpenter Mathias Haydn around 1728, Joseph Haydn was born on March 31, 1732, and he spent the first six years of his life there. His brother Michael, who was also musically gifted, was born on September 13, 1737. Although the two composers left their family home at a young age, they remained connected to their birthplace for life.
The former residence of the Haydn family was acquired by the province of Lower Austria in 1958, converted into a museum, and has since served as a space for cultural events of various kinds.
Between October 2016 and September 2017, the listed memorial site was carefully renovated and reopened on September 14, 2017, as a renewed exhibition and event center, just in time for Michael Haydn's 280th birthday.
