Ekmekçizade Kervansarayı is a 17th-century Ottoman caravanserai located in the historic centre of Edirne. Built in 1609, it was designed to accommodate travelling merchants, caravans, and animals along important trade routes. Today, it is regarded as one of the key examples of Ottoman commercial architecture in the city.
Ekmekçizade Kervansarayı was constructed in 1609 during the reign of Sultan Ahmed I, attributed to the imperial architect Sedefkâr Mehmed Ağa. It was commissioned by Ekmekçizade Ahmed Pasha as part of the Ottoman waqf system supporting trade and travel infrastructure. The building was strategically positioned in Edirne, a major transit city on routes connecting Istanbul with the Balkans and Central Europe.

The caravanserai was designed to serve both merchants and their animals, reflecting the logistical demands of long-distance trade in the Ottoman Empire. Historical accounts, including those of the traveller Evliya Çelebi, describe it as a large and fortified complex capable of housing thousands of horses and camels, with extensive stables and a vast inner courtyard. The structure functioned as a secure resting place resembling a small fortress, offering protection, storage, and accommodation for travelling caravans. Its monumental gate, high enough for loaded camels to pass through, emphasises its practical and symbolic importance in Ottoman trade networks.

Public transport

Edirne is accessible via regular intercity bus services from Istanbul and other major Turkish cities. Within the city, municipal buses and taxis provide easy access to the Talatpaşa district and historic centre. The caravanserai is located in a central urban area and is easily reachable from main transport routes.
