Transromanica Kärnten
Anlaß für die Gründung eines Diözesanmuseums im Jahr 1917 war die akute Bedrohung von Kunstwerken durch Verfall, Ausverkauf und Diebstahl. Aus Dachböden, Sakristeien zumeist entlegener Pfarr- und Filialkirchen wurden daher in den folgenden Jahren viele Kostbarkeiten geborgen und einer Restaurierung zugeführt. 1937 konnte schließlich eine beachtliche Sammlung in den Räumen der bischöflichen Residenz der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht werden. Mit der Übersiedlung des Museums in das neu erbaute Haus am Dom im Jahre 1974 ergab sich die Möglichkeit, Gesichtspunkte einer modernen Museumsgestaltung zu berücksichtigen.
In seinen 7 Räumen gewährt das Museum heute einen repräsentativen Einblick in die religiöse Kunst vergangener Epochen in Kärnten. Mit dem österreichweit ältesten Dokument einer Glasmalerei, der Magdalenenscheibe aus Weitensfeld (1160/70), dem Hölleiner Kruzifxus (1170/80) und dem Rundsiegel des Bischof Roman von Gurk (1131-1167) verfügt es über bedeutende Zeugnisse aus der Kunst der Romanik.
Als beherrschende Kunstepoche tritt uns jedoch - und dies ist durchaus als ein Charakteristikum Kärntens anzusehen- die Gotik mit einer großen Anzahl kostbarer Objekte entgegen. Dazu zählen Flügelaltäre (Rangersdorf, Flitschel, Wöllan), Einzelplastiken mit Darstellungen der Madonna, der Pietá und von Heiligen, Tafelbilder (Innernöring, Guttaring, Greifenburg u.a.), Paramente, liturgisches Gerät und ein Fastentuch (Steuerberg).
Neben einigen Werken des Barock gibt es auch noch Zeugnisse der Volkskunst wie Votivgaben, Votivbilder und Kuriositäten -darunter eine Kristallkugel, die zu Heilzwecken verwendet wurde- zu bewundern.
