Schweizer Geschichte zwischen Mythos und Wahrheit. Der Bundesbrief von Anfang August 1291 zwischen den Talgemeinden Schwyz, Uri und Nidwalden hat in der Schweizer Geschichte eine grosse Bedeutung erlangt.

Umso mehr erstaunt es, dass dieses Dokument während mehreren Jahrhunderten in Vergessenheit geraten war. Der Bundesbrief wurde erst 1724 im Archiv von Schwyz wieder entdeckt. Seit dem 19. Jahrhundert glaubte man, im Bündnis zwischen Uri, Schwyz und Unterwalden das Gründungsdokument der Eidgenossenschaft gefunden zu haben.

In jüngerer Zeit setzte sich eine differenziertere Betrachtung durch. Nach heutigen Erkenntnissen belegt das Dokument zwar nicht die Gründung der Eidgenossenschaft, es ist aber ein wichtiges Objekt der schweizerischen Erinnerungskultur. Diese wechselvolle Geschichte wird im Bundesbriefmuseum mit Originalurkunden aus dem Staatsarchiv Schwyz veranschaulicht.
