Die Sammlung des Bündner Kunstmuseums umfasst über 7000 Arbeiten aus allen Bereichen der bildenden Kunst vom 18. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart.
Ein kleiner Teil der Bestände ist permanent auf drei Geschossen in der Villa Planta ausgestellt. Es sind vorwiegend Werke von Bündner oder Schweizer Künstlern und Künstlerinnen. Mit umfassenden Werkgruppen sind Angelika Kauffmann, Giovanni Segantini, Augusto Giacometti, Giovanni Giacometti, Alberto Giacometti, Ferdinand Hodler, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, die Vertreter der Gruppe «Rot-Blau» und zeitgenössische Bündner KünstlerInnen wie Matias Spescha, Not Vital, HR Giger, Pascale Wiedemann oder Jules Spinatsch vertreten. Einen festen Platz in der Sammlungspräsentation nimmt auch die Medienkunst mit Videoinstallationen von Zilla Leutenegger oder Gabriela Gerber/Lukas Bardill ein.
Jedes Jahr finden zudem etwa sechs Ausstellungen statt. Neben Präsentationen historischer und zeitgenössischer Künstlerinnen und Künstlern sind immer wieder auch Gruppenausstellungen zu sehen. Die Sammlung und das künstlerische, kulturelle und geografische Umfeld des Kunstmuseums bilden für die Wechselausstellungen einen wichtigen Bezugspunkt.
