Im frühen Mittelalter verfiel die Route durch das Eisacktal, damit nahm die Bedeutung des Übergangs in Sexten wieder zu. Die im Spätmittelalter erfolgte Instandsetzung der Route durch das Eisacktal führte nicht zum Rückgang der Nutzung des Passes, da gleichzeitig die Tauernpässe für den Saumverkehr erschlossen wurden. Erst im 18. Jahrhundert verlor der Kreuzbergpass schließlich an Bedeutung.
Während der Kriegsjahre 1915-18 war der Kreuzergpass als stretegischer Übergang heftig umkämpft, die bereits um 1885 errichteten Festungen der Sperre Sexten wurden schwer in Mitleidenschaft gezogen oder zerstört. Um 1930 schließlich wurde der schmale Weg über den Pass breit ausgebaut und asphaltiert und hat bis heute vor allem touristische Bedeutung.
