Selimiye Mosque is almost integrated with the name of Edirne and is known as the symbolic structure of the city.
Selimiye Mosque was built on the order of Selim II in the period between 1569-1575. The mosque, which has a magnificent structure with its 4 minarets and a large dome, which fascinates with its appearance both inside and outside, is the work of Mimar Sinan. It is reported that Sinan the Architect built the mosque when he was 80 years old. The mosque was thoughtfully thought out in every sense and built in such a location that it has a splendor that can be seen from all over Edirne. Mimar Sinan himself described this building as his masterpiece. This eye-catching structure is considered one of the masterpieces of Ottoman-Turkish architecture. The mosque is also very important in the history of world architecture. The tile decorations in the mosque are particularly striking. It is known that these tiles, which add beauty to the beauty of the mosque, were made in Iznik, the most important tile production place of the period.
Selimiye Mosque, a great example of architecture, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011.
