The Mattersburg Viaduct, a distinctive landmark of the town of Mattersburg, was inaugurated on August 28, 1847, and remains a significant example of 19th-century engineering to this day. With a length of 250 meters, a width of 8.85 meters, and a height of 18 meters, it spans the Wulka Valley with 20 arches supported by 21 differently constructed supporting pillars. The masonry is made of fired bricks, while the pillar bases and abutments are made of natural stone. Originally built as part of the railway line between Wiener Neustadt and Sopron, the viaduct was considered a technical masterpiece of its time and even served as a model for the construction of the Semmering railway. Despite initial skepticism due to similar structures in other countries that had collapsed or suffered damage, the Mattersburg Viaduct has not sustained any major damage to this day and remains an impressive testament to Austrian railway history.
The viaduct is open to the public year-round and can be visited at any time!
