Above the old street settlement Vicus Tabernae, the origin of the town of Tawern, stands the large reconstructed temple complex in the middle of the forest. Here on Metzenberg, about 15 kilometers before Trier, travelers on their way to Trier could catch their first glimpse of the city. Above all, however, they had the opportunity to thank the gods and win their favor. Mercury was the main god of the temple district, responsible for trade, commerce, and transportation. But it was not only travelers who came here; the temples were also a place of worship for local pilgrims. A portal building led into the district. On the higher terrace, two temples of different types have been reconstructed, a Gallo-Roman peripteral temple, and a chapel beside it.
The temple complex is located along the hiking trail G11. There are parking spaces available at the forest parking lot. From here, it is about a 15-minute walk to the temple complex. The restrooms at the temple complex are only open by prior arrangement as part of group tours.
