The holiday region Saar-Upper Moselle is located in the west of Rhineland-Palatinate, near the city of Trier and in the middle of the Germany-France-Luxembourg border triangle. Here, the Saar and Moselle rivers flow together picturesquely – nestled between sunny Muschelkalk slopes and steep slate slopes. The diverse landscape offers ideal conditions for relaxation, active holidays, and culinary enjoyment.
Hiking, cycling, canoeing – active on the move
Numerous premium hiking trails lead through the region, including the multiple award-winning Moselsteig with its side routes, as well as the dream loops of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig. Cyclists also come to their pleasure on well-developed paths such as the Moselle and Saar cycle paths. These lead through vineyards, forests, and idyllic towns – partly cross-border to Luxembourg and France. Canoe tours on the Saar offer special nature experiences – ideal for families and explorers.
Wine culture between Saar and Upper Moselle
The region is known for its variety of wines. On the slate slopes of the Saar, world-renowned Rieslings are produced from sites like Scharzhofberg or Ockfener Bockstein. On the Muschelkalk soils of the Upper Moselle, Elbling and Burgundy varieties grow. Numerous wineries invite you to wine tastings in modern vinotheques – a must for connoisseurs.
Cultural highlights and picturesque towns
The historic town of Saarburg delights with medieval flair, an impressive castle complex, and a waterfall in the middle of the old town. High above the Saar towers the Klause of Kastel-Staadt – a historic monument with a view. In Konz, Roman ruins and the open-air museum Roscheider Hof tell of the region’s rich past.
Festivals, markets & events
Numerous events make the region accessible all year round: The Saar Riesling Summer in August offers insights into renowned wineries. The Saar Wine Festival in Saarburg in September welcomes visitors with a colorful program of music, a festive parade, and fireworks. Other highlights include the Homeland and Wine Festival in Konz as well as the St. Rochus Wine Fair in Nittel. In addition, wine hikes, farm festivals, and traditional markets invite you to enjoy and join in the celebrations.
