Maritime architectural monument from the 19th century
For 70 years, the lock served as a barrier against high water and storm surges to protect the lowlands of the Geeste from flooding. It also served as a sluice to regulate the water level for shipping. After the construction of the new storm surge barrier in 1961, the structure became non-functional and was finally decommissioned in 1967. The technical structure was placed under a preservation order in 1985 and extensively renovated in 1999.
Today, the structure is a popular destination for hikers and cyclists.
