1910 erinnerte man sich auch im russischen Zarenreich des großen Anteils, den die Truppen Alexander I. am Sieg bei Leipzig im Jahre 1813 hatten. Unter dem Ehrenvorsitz des Großfürsten Michael Alexandrowitsch nahm ein Baukomitee seine planende Arbeit auf. Die Stadt Leipzig stellte das Grundstück für einen Kirchenbau zur Verfügung. Als Architekt wirkte der renommierte Sakralbaumeister Pokrowski, dessen Vorarbeiten die Leipziger Architekten Weidenbach und Tschammer vollendeten und umsetzten. Nach der Grundsteinlegung am 28. Dezember 1912 konnte das imposante Bauwerk bereits am 17. Oktober 1913 als St. Alexi Gedächtniskirche geweiht werden und erinnert seither an die 22 000 gefallenen russischen Soldaten der Völkerschlacht.
