The Petrovaradin Clock Tower, often called the “Drunken Clock” (Pijani sat), is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Petrovaradin Fortress. Its unusual clock face—where the hour hand is longer than the minute hand—was designed so sailors on the Danube could read the time from afar.
Perched high above the Danube on Petrovaradin Fortress, the clock tower dates from around 1750, during the period when the fortress was expanded under Habsburg rule. Locals affectionately call it Pijani sat, or the “Drunken Clock,” because its accuracy varies slightly with the seasons. The mechanical timing system reacts to temperature changes: in colder weather the clock tends to run a few minutes slow, while in hot summer conditions it may run slightly fast.

The clock consists of three interconnected mechanisms: the main timing system that drives the hands, a quarter-hour striking mechanism, and a separate system that chimes the full hours. Its four black dials, each over two metres in diameter, display Roman numerals. The unusual arrangement of the hands—long hour hand and shorter minute hand—allowed river sailors on the nearby Danube to easily determine the hour from a distance, which mattered in the age before digital navigation and wristwatches.

For nearly two and a half centuries the clock was maintained by the military authorities responsible for the fortress. Since 1952 it has been under civilian management, yet the mechanism still operates largely as it always has: it must be wound manually every day. At the top of the tower stands a weather vane decorated with a heart rather than the more typical spear, adding another small eccentricity to this already quirky timekeeper.

Directions

The clock tower stands on the upper plateau of Petrovaradin Fortress overlooking the Danube. From the Petrovaradin bridge or the lower town, visitors can walk uphill through the fortress paths to reach the tower in about 15–20 minutes. Those arriving by car can drive to the fortress parking areas and continue on foot to the viewpoint near the clock tower.
