Hochmeister Clemens August (1723-1761) ließ 1740 in der nähe des Mühlwertores eine Pestsäule errichten.

Mit ihr wollte man der Opfer der Pestepedemie gedenken und göttlichen Schutz für die Zukunft erbitten.

So lautet die Inschrift: "Heilige Gottesgebärerin sei mir einzige Helferin in jeder Gefahr."

Mergentheim ist eine Male von der Pest heimgesucht worden. Die Marienfigur wurde 1884 von Tobias Weiss geschaffen.
