On its inside there is an elevator which takes the visitors up to a height of over 50 meters, so they can enjoy a particular view of the monument. There is a mosaic on the ground showing the sea routes which the represented discoverers took on their journey.
The impressive compass was a present from the republic of South Africa on occasion of the commemorative ceremony of 1960.
