Slávnostne ho otvoril Michal Miloslav Hodža 15. 9. 1866. Pod správcovstvom Viliama Paulínyho Tótha sa tu vyučovalo až do zákazu maďarskou vládou koncom januára 1875. Po rokoch chátrania, vyhlásenia za národnú kultúrnu pamiatku a po rekonštrukcii ukončenej v roku 2003, dnes ponúka vzdelanie, oddych i ubytovanie. Slávnu minulosť pripomínajú pamätné tabule na priečelí. Veľký podiel na zriadení gymnázia malo organizátorské úsilie 1. matičného podpredsedu Karola Kuzmányho.
Interiér pamiatky nie je verejnosti prístupný, návševníkom sa ponúka len prehliadka exteriéru.

Príjazd vlakom alebo autobusom (vlaková a autobusová stanica Martin sa nachádza 850m - asi 12 minút peši).
