The Lindwurm Fountain, the landmark of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, is located at Neuen Platz in the city center. The fountain combines masterful sculptural art with mythological significance and is a popular photo motif. The Lindwurm is the heraldic animal of the city and a fixed part of the top attractions.
The monumental fountain was created between 1583 and 1593 in the style of the Renaissance. The Lindwurm weighs around 6 tons.
It depicts the Lindwurm, a legendary mythical creature that, according to legend, once terrorized the Klagenfurt Basin and was eventually defeated by brave men.
The Lindwurm consists of a single block of chlorite slate, which was artistically carved by Ulrich Vogelsang. The stone originates from Kreuzbergl, the "local mountain" of the Klagenfurters.
The dynamic representation of the monster shows its mouth wide open, ready to roar, with wings and a curved tail.
Next to the Lindwurm stands the figure of Hercules, which was added in 1636 by Michael Hönel. Hercules symbolizes the overcoming of chaos and danger.
Of great art historical significance is the grid of wrought-iron flowers that surrounds the Lindwurm Fountain.
