The Jewish cemetery in Mattersburg, established in 1694, is one of the most significant testimonies to Jewish history in Burgenland. As the burial site of the once-flourishing Jewish community, which was part of the Seven Holy Communities (Schewa Kehilot), around 1,500 individuals were buried here until 1938. During the Nazi era, the cemetery was severely damaged; many grave stones were removed or destroyed. In 1966, remaining fragments of gravestones were assembled into a memorial wall, and symbolic gravestones were erected to preserve the character of the cemetery.
Today, the cemetery is a protected monument and serves as a quiet place of remembrance for the Jewish community of Mattersburg.
The cemetery is accessible by appointment at the Mattersburg town hall.
