Erst bei späteren Untersuchungen wurde die historische Bedeutung dieses Fundes erkann. Das Alter von Ötzi wurde mit Hilfe der Radiokohlenstoffdatierung auf etwa 5250 Jahre geschätzt.
Die Mumie wurde zur Untersuchung nach Insbruck gebracht, seit 1998 ist sie im Archäologischen Museum in Bozen ausgestellt.
