: Via the Similaun Hut and the Ötzi Monument to the Summit
From Vernagt, located on the reservoir of the same name in the Schnalstal (1,711 m), follow the signs for “Similaunhütte” for about 20 minutes uphill to the Tisenhof (1,822 m; snack bar), then continue along the trail marked No. 2 in the secluded Tisental valley on a long, mostly moderately steep ascent—first through sparse larch forest, then across open terrain, and finally up a rocky slope on a well-maintained path to the large Similaun Hut at the Niederjoch (3,019 m; open in summer); 4 hours from Vernagt. From the refuge, follow the marked rock path along the ridge—partly equipped with fixed ropes—up and down several times to the Tisenjoch, where the trail ends (3,208 m). A narrow stone pyramid with information panels commemorates the discovery of “Ötzi”; 1 hour from the Similaun Hut.
