The "Fliegenstein" crowns a mighty Iron Age burial mound in the forest between Hettenleidelheim and Wattenheim.
The stone that is still visible today is probably just a part of an originally taller stele. The Celtic burial mound on which it sits measures about 22 m in diameter and has a height of approximately 2.5 m.
The name "Fliegenstein" likely derives from the original name "Fliehenstein." At this location, fugitives were at least temporarily protected from further persecution.
The Fliegenstein can be reached via the Leininger Panoramaweg and the Leininger Wanderweg from Wattenheim or Hettenleidelheim.
