Das vom Architekten Wilhelm Kreis geschaffene 33 m hohe Denkmal wurde am 20. Mai 1902 feierlich eingeweiht. Die kraftvollen Säulen, die das enge Zusammenstehen der deutschen Stämme symbolisieren, werden durch einen hohen Tambour zusammengehalten und mit einem mächtigen Helm überhöht. Der im Architrav eingemeißelte Wahlspruch Ehre, Freiheit, Vaterland steht für den Leitgedanken der akademischen Jugend während der antinapoleonische Kriege und im Krieg 1870/71. Das Denkmal ist all jenen gewidmet, die im 19. Jahrhundert für die Einheit und Freiheit Deutschlands eingetreten sind, insbesondere den in dieser Zeitperiode gefallenen Burschenschaftern. Eine Dauerausstellung im Inneren des Denkmals gibt einen Überblick über das freiheitliche und demokratische Wollen der urburschenschaftlichen Bewegung, die Geschichte der Burschenschaft und des Burschenschaftsdenkmals.
