Die schon von Weitem sichtbare Befreiungshalle ist gleichzeitig das Wahrzeichen der im Altmühltal gelegenen Stadt Kelheim.
König Ludwig I. ließ die monumentale Siegeshalle in den Jahren 1842 bis 1863 auf dem Michelsberg in Kelheim erbauen. Baumeister der monumentalen Gedenkstätte waren Friedrich von Gärtner und Leo von Klenze.
Der mächtige Rundbau wurde aus Kelheimer Kalkstein erbaut. Auf den Strebepfeilern der Außenfassade befinden sich 18 Kolossalstatuen als Allegorien der deutschen Volksstämme. Im Innenbereich der Befreiungshalle reichen sich 34 Siegesgöttinnen aus Carrara-Marmor die Hände. Das Ensemble wird durch 17 vergoldete Schilde komplettiert, die aus der Bronze eingeschmolzener Geschütze gefertigt wurden.
125 Treppen führen zur inneren Empore und weitere 40 Treppen ebnen den Weg zur äußeren Aussichtsterrasse. Ein weiter Blick über die Stadt Kelheim, ins Altmühltal und in das Naturschutzgebiet "Weltenburger Enge" belohnen den Aufstieg.
Der Kuppelsaal ist für Rollstuhlfahrer und mobil eingeschränkte Menschen über einen Lift erreichbar.
