The Monastery of St John the Baptist is one of the most important medieval religious monuments in the Eastern Rhodopes. Founded in the early 9th century and extensively rebuilt during the 11th century, it served as a major ecclesiastical centre connected to the medieval Diocese of Ahridos. Today, the monastery is renowned for its archaeological discoveries, preserved medieval architecture, and historic frescoes.
The origins of the monastery date to the beginning of the 9th century, when a fortified monastic complex was established on the site of an earlier church. Built in a style influenced by the monastic traditions of Mount Athos, the complex developed into an important religious and administrative centre. During the early 11th century, the monastery underwent a major reconstruction that gave it a distinctive fortified layout. Strong defensive walls surrounded the complex, with square towers positioned at each corner and at the centre of every wall, reflecting both religious and military considerations during a turbulent period in regional history.

To the east of the main church stood the residence of the abbot, who also held the position of bishop of Ahridos, one of the most significant medieval dioceses in the Rhodope region. Archaeological discoveries, including lead seals bearing the names of Bishops Toma, Konstantin, and Eustatic, have confirmed the monastery's ecclesiastical importance. In the early 13th century, part of the church was converted into a crypt, and excavations carried out in 1998 revealed an exceptional burial containing the remains of a high-ranking bishop alongside fragments of gold-woven episcopal garments dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. Portions of the church's medieval frescoes have survived, with some dating to the 13th century. Following extensive restoration, the monastery acquired its present appearance in 2000 and continues to function as an active religious site.
