Das Kloster Benediktbeuern entstand als frühkarolingische Gründung im 8. Jahrhundert. Laut Chronisten aus dem 11. Jhd. soll das Kloster Benediktbeuern im Jahre 740 von den adeligen Brüdern Lantfrid, Waldram und Eliland errichtet worden sein. Bischof Bonifatius hat es im gleichen Jahr dem hl. Benedikt geweiht. Benediktbeuern gilt somit als ältestes Kloster Oberbayerns.
Noch vor dem Jahr 800 vermittelte Karl der Große die Armreliquie des Hl. Benedikt, worauf der Name des Klosters in „Benedictoburanum“ geändert wurde, was soviel heißt wie „Haus oder Kloster, das in besonderer Weise dem Hl. Benedikt geweiht ist“.
Seit 1930 ist die Ordensgemeinschaft der Salesianer Don Boscos im ehemaligen Benediktinerkloster beheimatet. Entsprechend ihres Ordensgründers etwickelten die Salesianer das Kloster zu einem Zentrum religiöser Bidung, Wissenschaft und Erziehung vor allem im Dienst an jungen Menschen.
