Located in Plovdiv's historic Old Town, the complex served as a residence, place of worship, and gathering centre for members of the order. Like other Mevlevi lodges throughout the Ottoman world, it would have included spaces for prayer, religious instruction, accommodation, and ceremonial performances known as the sema, the ritual whirling ceremony for which the order became famous.
Although the Mevlevi Order declined following the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the suppression of dervish orders in Turkey during the early twentieth century, the Plovdiv Mevlevi Hane remains an important architectural and historical monument. Its survival provides valuable insight into the religious diversity of Ottoman Plovdiv and the presence of Sufi traditions in the Balkans. Today, it forms part of the rich cultural landscape of the Old Town, alongside churches, mosques, merchant houses, and archaeological remains spanning more than two millennia of history.
