A former monastery complex finds new life within its old walls

The Cistercian monastery was founded in 1192. Its founder was Burgrave Heinrich von Leisnig. By 1250, all the buildings had been completed, along with a wall to protect the monastery, remnants of which still exist today. The chapter house and the abbot’s residence, along with the infirmary and the chapel for the sick, are fully preserved. Visitors can also admire the ruins of the former brewery and the necessarium—a monks’ toilet. The buildings of the monastery complex are constructed of regional porphyry rubble stone. The chapel and the abbot’s house also feature more elaborately designed elements made of Rochlitz porphyry, a high-quality stone that has been quarried on Rochlitz Mountain since the Middle Ages.

As in every Cistercian monastery, hard work and obedience were part of daily life here, as were choral prayer and choral singing. Today, the historic walls of the monastery, situated in the idyllic Mulde landscape, are a major attraction for many visitors.
