Large areas of the tunnel systems of the "White Pit" and the "Maria Pit" have been uncovered in recent years and are accessible as visitor mines. On a tour through the several 100 m of accessible mine workings as well as large underground and surface excavations, traces from all mining epochs of the last 600 years can be observed. A visit to the Palatinate Mining Museum in the centre of Imsbach is also recommended.
In the Palatinate, mining has a long tradition, evidenced in some areas dating back to the Celtic period. In the mining experience world of Imsbach, which includes two visitor mines and the Palatinate Mining Museum, the diversity of these geological treasures found in the region can be admired:
Mining traces from the last 600 years greet visitors on a tour through the extensive tunnel system of the visitor mine "Weiße Grube": From areas meticulously worked with hammer and chisel in the Middle Ages to the shaft workings blasted with explosives during the last phase of mining in the early 20th century. Copper, silver, and cobalt ores were painstakingly brought to light here. In the large underground and aboveground mining extents, glowing minerals in all colors hint at the former richness of the mine. Above ground, techniques for processing the ores are demonstrated.
Since 2006, the over 250-year-old iron ore mine "Grube Maria", last operated in 1923, can be visited. Exploring its tunnels and shafts provides an impressive picture of the hard work underground. The mine has two levels (in mining terms = “Sohlen”). The main tunnel of the lower level is about 250 meters long and completely straight, allowing visitors to still see the entrance as a small bright spot from its far end. Here and in several side tunnels, much can be learned about the exposed rocks, iron ore deposits, and mining techniques. A shaft with a spiral staircase leads to the tunnel of the upper level, located about 15 meters higher, which intersects narrow tunnels from the 18th century.
The exhibition “The Palatinate Mining” presents in the Palatinate Mining Museum the mineral and metallic raw materials extracted in the Palatinate and their uses, thus depicting 300 million years of Earth history. In the newly conceived permanent exhibition "Terra Crystallum," visitors receive a fascinating overview of unique minerals from around the world. About 400 exhibits, a permanent loan from the private collection of Roger Lang, showcase the splendor of colors and shapes of ores, minerals, and gemstones – a visit is worthwhile! In addition, the museum, located in the center of Imsbach, offers changing special exhibitions.
Complementarily, three mining historical circular hiking trails (Copper Path 1 and Copper Path 2, Iron Path) pass numerous mining relics. They are marked with information boards and provide insights into mining history along with wonderful views and a refreshing nature experience.
