Der Stollen zeigt als einzig erhaltenes Zeugnis den römischen Bergbau nördlich der Alpen.

Der Stollen wurde wiederbelebt durch den mittelalterlichen Azurbergbau zum Zwecke der Gewinnung der Malerfarbe "Azur" (Wallerfanger Blau), mit der auch Albrecht Dürer gemalt hat. In der Umgebung finden sich viele interessante Ziele wie das Blauloch, der Blauwald und die Drei-Kapuziner.
