Belgenbach Mill

The Belgenbach Mill is known as the oldest grain mill complex in the Monschau region, although its exact date of construction is unknown. It was one of the Bannmühlen or “Bann mills”, where the local populace was required by decree to have their grains ground. And that is what it was used for by the residents of Eicherscheid and Imgenbroich until 1926, when it was converted into a youth centre. In 1934, the tiny Chapel of our Saviour was built by the stream here. After the Second World War, this heavily damaged building was restored and later fell into private hands. Near the mill, the Meier Cross commemorates the tragic fate of the royal forester Leonhard Meier, who was shot dead on this spot by a poacher in 1875.
