Als Schutz der Hafenanlage gedacht, wurde im 13. Jhdt. der alte Leuchtturm oder Mangturm erbaut. Gleichzeitig bildete er das südliche Ende des breiten Grabens, der die sogenannte Insel, also den westlichen, damals unbesiedelten Teil vom Stadtgebiet trennte. Den Namen Mangturm hat er vom früher neben ihm stehenden Tuch- oder Mangenhaus. Das oberste Geschoß mit dem bunten Dachabschluß gehört erst dem letzten Jahrhundert an.
Nach Blitzschlag im Sommer 1979 ist der Helm mit Ziegeln vom Typ des vergangenen Jahrhunderts neu eingedeckt, das Äußere zugleich gereinigt worden.
