Der Luitpoldturm befindet sich mitten im Pfälzerwald im Naturpark Pfälzerwald. Er steht im Gemeindegebiet des rund 7 km westsüdwestlich gelegenen Merzalben und 1,3 km nordnordwestlich des zur Nachbargemeinde Wilgartswiesen gehörenden Weilers Hermersbergerhof auf der Gipfelregion des Weißenbergs (ca. 610 m).

Der Luitpoldturm beim Hermersbergerhof, benannt nach dem Prinzregenten Luitpold von Bayern, steht auf dem dritthöchsten Berg

des Pfälzerwaldes, dem 607 m hohen Weißenberg.

Auf Anregung des Pfälzischen Dichters Fritz Claus begann 1908 der noch junge Pfälzerwaldverein mit dem Bau des Turmes.

Im Jahre 1909 wurde der 28 m hohe Luitpoldturm eingeweiht.
166 Stufen muß man ersteigen, um einen herrlichen Rundblick auf dem Dach des Pfälzerwaldes zu genießen.

Bei guter Fernsicht kann man von hier oben über 300 Berggipfel sehen.

Gebaut zu Ehren des damaligen Prinzregenten Luitpold von Bayern (1821- 1912). Der Turm wurde 1909 aus Bundsandstein gebaut und ist 28 Meter hoch. Bis zur Plattform auf dem Turm sind es ca. 165 Stufen. Von dort hat man einen tollen Ausblick über den Hermersbergerhof, dem Pfälzer Wald, dem Elsaß und ins Saarland. 2001 wurde der Turm renoviert und 2002 hat man Orientierungstafeln für den Ortsunkundigen angebracht. Prinzregent Luitpold von Bayern Luitpold von Bayern wurde als fünftes Kind des Königs Ludwig I. von Bayern am 12.03.1821 geboren. Bis zu seinem Regierungsantritt am 09.06.1886, diente er sich in der Armee bis zum Generalinspekteur hoch. Während seiner fünfundzwanzigjährigen Regentschaft, erlebte das Königreich Bayern eine Blütenzeit. Die Pfalz gehörte von 1816 bis 1949 zu Bayern. Um den Prinzregenten zu Ehren wurden Straßen, Theater, Parks, Schulen, Aussichtstürme und sogar Torten nach ihm benannt. Z.B. Prinzregentenstraße, Prinzenweg (siehe Rittersteine Nr. 41), Prinzregententheater, Luitpoldpark, Luitpold-Gymnasium, Luitpoldturm und die Prinzregententorte. Er starb am 12.12.1912. (siehe auch den etwas weiter südlich gelegenen Ritterstein).
