Der massive spätmittelalterliche Bergfried teilt seit weit über einem halben Jahrtausend die Schicksale Bruchsals, er hat die freudigen Tage gesehen und die schlimmen und ist somit ein starkes Stück Geschichte mitten im Herzen der Stadt. Übrigens wurde er 2008 650 Jahre alt.

Im Jahre 1057 hatte Kaiser Heinrich III. dem Speyerer Bischof Konrad I. den Bruchsaler Königshof geschenkt. Vom bischöflichen Baumeister Gerhard von Ehrenberg wurde schließlich 1358 der mächtige Turm des Alten Schlosses errichtet, was am bis heute eingemauerten Steinrelief an seiner Ostseite mit der lateinischen Jahreszahl zu erkennen ist. Seine Errichtung an der strategisch wichtigen Nordflanke der Stadt steht wahrscheinlich in engem Zusammenhang mit dem Wiederaufbau von Bruchsal nach lang andauernden militärischen Konflikten in der ersten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts.
