Alte Kleinstadt im hessischen Werra-Meißner-Kreis nahe der Grenze zu Thüringen

Wanfried ist ein sehr alter Ort an der Werra  im hessischen Werra-Meißner-Kreis. Sie liegt ganz östlich in Hessen etwa 6 km vor der Grenze zu Thüringen. Sie ist bekannt für ihren historischen Stadtkern mit gut erhaltener, bemerkenswerter Fachwerkarchitektur, einer der schönsten Orte Deutschlands.
Als der heilige Bonifatius (englischer Missionar Wynfreth, etwa 673 - 754) um 720 in die Werra-Gegend kam, gab es die Ansiedlung schon, vor 813 wurde es als "In wanen In Riden" bzw. "Uuanenreodum" erwähnt. Im Grenzgebiet gelegen, wechselte der Besitz zwischen den hessischen und Thüringer Landgrafen bevor es im 15. Jhd. entgültig hessisch wurde. 1608 wurde Wanfried durch Privileg des Landgrafen Moritz von Hessen zur Stadt erhoben und erhielt Marktgerechtigkeit. Zu der Zeit war Wanfried als Endhafen der Weser-Werra-Schifffahrt ein bedeutender Hanse-Handelsplatz mit Verbindungen nach Bremen, Leipzig und Nürnberg. Der alte Werrahafen Schlagd mit dem befestigten Uferkai und den Packhäusern zeugt davon (Info: Förderverein).
Nachdem die Stadt im Dreißigjährigen Krieg 1626 von Tillys Truppen geplündert und niedergebrannt worden war, erlangte der Ort seine Handelsbedeutung im 17./18. Jhd. wieder. Bevorzugtes Handelsgut waren Kaffee, Zucker, Öl, Gewürze, Tabak, Wollwaren, Wein, Honig und Fisch. In dieser Zeit entstanden die prächtigen Handelshäuser an der Marktstraße, stattliche Bürger- und Wirtshäuser, Herbergen, eine Börse und ein Brauhaus. Im historische Stadtkern bilden die prächtigen Fachwerkhäuser ein fast komplett erhaltenes Ensemble. Mit dem Niedergang der Werraschifffahrt durch die Konkurrenz von Eisenbahn und Straßenverkehr nahm auch der Reichtum Wanfrieds im 19. Jhd. ab.
Nach zunehmendem Leerstand in der Altstadt von Wanfried engagiert sich die 2006 gegründete lokale Initiative „Bürgergruppe für den Erhalt Wanfrieder Häuser“ zunehmend für den Erhalt und warb neue Immobilieneigentümer u.a. aus den Niederlanden an. Viele Altbauten und denkmalgeschützte Fachwerkhäuser wurden daraufhin saniert wieder genutzt. 1972 wurden die Umlandgemeinden Altenburschla, Aue, Heldra und Völkershausen Stadtteile von Wanfried, die damit etwa 4500 Einwohner hat. Wanfried hat mehrere Gaststätten: Hafengaststätte "Zur Schlagd", Hotel & Restaurant "Zum Schwan", Brauhaus Wanfried, Pizzeria Gina, Pizzeria Rimini. Der Wohnmobilhafen Wanfried beim Gewerbegebiet am nördlichen Stadtrand bietet Platz für 12 Wohnmobile oder Caravans. Das Schwimmbad Wanfried liegt am nordöstlichen Stadtrand in Richtung Plesse. Der Kalkhof (Rittergut Wanfried) mit 3 Ferienwohnungen liegt etwa 2 km außerhalb des Stadtzentrums an der B249 am Waldrand unterhalb des Konsteins (Plesse).
Durch Wanfried führt die Werra-Wasser-Wander-Route Treffurt-Eschwege, der Werratal-Radweg und viele interessante Wanderwege, wie der Premiumweg P5 zur Plesse oder P12 Mainzer Köpfe.
